Urusei Yatsura is a commemorative work for Takahashi Rumiko-Sensei as her first series to be published! It was serialized from 1978 to 1987, and it established ‘love comedy’ as a manga genre which was still unfamiliar to Japan’s manga world at the time!

One day, an alien race ‘Oni’ comes to invade the Earth!
The two species end up fighting for the future of the planet, but......!?

To briefly introduce, one day, the Earth is invaded by alien ‘Oni’ race! The two species end up battling via playing ‘tag’ (‘game of Oni’ in Japanese) for rulership of the planet! The one chosen as the human-race representative (randomly through computer generator) was a hedonistic and simple-minded highschooler Moroboshi Ataru!

Ataru ends up playing tag with the Oni-race representative, Lum! If Ataru can catch Lum, then he wins! But if he can’t......? Oni-race representative Lum can fly and Ataru cannot capture her easily! But then ‘one word’ from Ataru’s mouth becomes a key to shift the dynamic......!?

Genre-wise, this is a super classic love comedy! It can be watched with no effort and concludes at every episode, a very casual anime! I especially recommend it for those who liked Ranma 1/2 !

Why Remake the Urusei Yatsura Anime Now?

“I want the viewers to gain power from non-common-sensical actions”

Why was Urusei Yatsura remade at this specific time? According to the creators’ interview, they wanted the viewers to enjoy this work filled with innocence, Sci-fi, school-life, love-comedy, precisely for this generation.

Because it was serialized during a different generation, Urusei Yatsura has different character personalities and plot-characteristics from current generation’s anime and manga! There is a significant effort and commitment to the animating process, and among the 366 total episodes, the selecting process of the episodes was carefully discussed with Takahashi Rumiko-Sensei, the artist, for 4 cours (about 48 episodes, span of a year) scheduled to air!
