I am sure many of you have already heard of Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou), but some of you do not know what kind of manga/anime it is. I found it really interesting! So, today, I want to introduce Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Genkokujou) as simply as possible!

What kind of story is Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou)?

The genre is “reincarnation in the different world”!
A girl who was a bookworm passed away in the modern world and reincarnated in the fantasy world. After reborn in the different world, she tries to encourage people to read more books!

The main character, Myne, was a bookwarm who used to live in the modern world. When she was reading a book in her room, an earthquake hit and many books fell on her. She crushed by her own many books and passed away during the earthquake. At her last gasp, she wished strongly to be able to read books even in another life!!

When Myne woke up, she was in an unknown place and met with people who spoke a different language. All of sudden, she realized that currently her name was Myne and she died once in the modern world. She was surprised to know that her second life had just started and felt loneness and anxiety. To make herself calm down, she decided to look for a book to read.

Oh my goodness! There is no letters in the different world!!
There are Arabic numbers, but no letters and no books existed in the world!?

One day, Myne went shopping with her mother. She found a city like in the time of Medieval Europe. She was so excited and expected to find books there, but she could not find one.

Finally, she found a book! However there was no printing technology yet in the world, so it was handwritten by people and very rare. Since Myne is a commoner in the world, she could not obtain such a book.

Okay, if there is no book I can read, then I can write it!
She decided and tried! During the whole process of creating a book, she also creates various things to make people’s life convenient!

She found letters in the world, but commoners cannot get any books. Then, she thought she could write one! Myne tried to make full use of her knowledge she earned in the previous life and tried to create a book! She used fibers to make a papyrus (materials similar to thick paper that was used to write on the surface in ancient times). Also she created shampoo by using her knowledges from books she read in the previous life. She made so much effort to create books!

She tries to develop the world by using her knowledge slowly but surely!
You will feel the story very realistic and interesting!

I think the charm of Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou) is “frontier spirit”! She will make her new world better, more convenient and more interesting by using her knowledge to create various things! For example, making pancakes from scratch, recreating process of work to be more efficient......etc. Without using magic in the world, she tries to make people’s life easier and convenient. Always fun to read this manga and you can learn a lot at the same time. If you read this manga, you can prepare to reincarnate in the different world! Maybe!?

Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou) does not contain any battles or flashy actions. The illustration was not super beautiful (well, of course, the animation is great though!), but creating things from nothing is quite exciting to watch. Myne solves problems one after another. She gets over obstacles. These are the charms of this anime. You feel some sort of accomplishment with Myne. I hope you can watch Season 1 and 2 along with Season 3!
